Once your admin has turned on TrueMark in your Canvas integration, you can easily create and grade TrueMark assignments within Canvas.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. From Canvas, find your course > "+ Assignment" > Enter the assignment details, and as the "Submission Type" select "External tool".

  2. You should then be directed to TrueMark in a pop-up iframe.

    1. Create a new assignment: Click "Create assignment" > fill in your assignment details > "Publish"

    2. Link an existing assignment: If you have already created a TrueMark assignment. You can find the assignment > Click "..." > "Link to Canvas".

  3. Back in Canvas, make sure to hit "Select" > "Load this Tool in a new Tab". This will link the TrueMark assignment you created to the Canvas assignment.

  4. 🔥 You're done! Hit "Save and Publish" in Canvas and see those submissions roll in

    1. ✅ Once published, students get a link to their assignment editor in Canvas.

Keeping assignment access in sync

When creating Canvas assignments linked to TrueMark, make sure students can access their assignments as intended.

Assigned Sections/Classes

Canvas

TrueMark

A single Canvas course can have several sections.

Each Canvas section automatically becomes its own class in TrueMark.

🚨Action required: When creating assignments, be sure to assign your TrueMark assignment to the same sections as your Canvas assignment (Learn more ➡️ )

Available from

🚨Action required: Make sure your TM assignment’s Scheduled Publish date matches the “Available From” date in Canvas.

Students won’t see the TrueMark link in Canvas until the Canvas assignment opens.

However, they can still log into TrueMark directly — so avoid publishing the TrueMark assignment early.

To set this in TrueMark, use "Schedule" publish.

Available to

After the Canvas assignment closes, students won’t see the TrueMark link in Canvas.

They can still open TrueMark directly, but they’ll see an error if they try to submit. To fully close it, Lock the assignment in TrueMark.

If set, assignments will auto-lock at this time.

You can also manually lock or unlock the TM assignment anytime. See more.

Duplicating a Canvas assignment linked to TrueMark

The easiest way to duplicate a TrueMark assignment is to start in Canvas and create a new assignment using TrueMark as the External Tool. When the TrueMark pop-up opens, find the assignment you want to copy, then click the vertical “…” menu > “Duplicate.” You can make any changes and click "Assign" to create the TrueMark assignment. The pop-up will close, and you can finish configuring the Canvas assignment as usual.

⚠️ Important: Duplicating the assignment directly inside Canvas will not fully duplicate the connected TrueMark assignment. If you already duplicated the assignment in Canvas, you’ll also need to duplicate it separately in TrueMark.

Troubleshooting:

Important notes:

  • Multi-sections: Multiple sections on a canvas course are imported as separate classes in TrueMark. To create assignments across these multiple sections,

    • In TrueMark: when creating the assignment, make sure to select all sections in the "Assign" section.

    • In Canvas: make sure to assign the assignment to all desired students (e.g. "Everyone" in the course)

    • See Troubleshooting if you make a mistake.

  • Edits don't auto-sync yet. If you change the due-date or update the assignment from a draft to a published assignment, make sure to also update the TrueMark assignment separately.

  • Google drive uploads: When you create a TrueMark assignment in Canvas via the pop-up iframe, you won't be able to uplaod resources directly from Google Drive.

    • As a work-around, you can create the assignment directly in TrueMark, upload documents from Google drive, and then link the assignment to a Canvas assignment. (See step 2a).

⚠️ Clear out accidental Canvas assignments linked to TrueMark assignments.

Canvas assignments that were badly linked can cause student access issues. If you're making changes to fix assignments in a bad state, delete those unneeded assignments or "unset" their External tool settings by editing the Canvas assignment.

"I already created the TrueMark assignment in TrueMark"

Make sure the assignment isn't linked to an existing Canvas assignment.

Follow the step-by-step instructions above to create or edit a Canvas assignment. You can then link your existing TrueMark assignment in step 2a -- you can find the existing assignment and select "Link to Canvas".

"I forgot to assign my assignment to multiple sections in TrueMark":

  • Option 1 - Edit assigned classes: In TrueMark, you can edit your existing TrueMark assignment and assign it to the appropriate classes using the "Classes" dropdown. We'll automatically associate this to the primary assignment you've already linked to your Canvas Assignment.

  • Option 2 - Duplicate assignment: In TrueMark, you can duplicate the existing TrueMark assignment onto the missing sections through the "Duplicate" action. We'll automatically associate this to the primary assignment you've already linked to your Canvas Assignment.

  • Option 3 - Delete assignment: You can delete the Canvas and TrueMark assignments and repeat the process again.

"Something went wrong"

  • Option 1: You can delete the Canvas and TrueMark assignments and repeat the process again.

  • Option 2: Edit your Canvas assignment, and then restart the steps in the step-by-step instructions. You can update the linked TrueMark assignment by pressing "Find" in the Submission Type section.
